Change to Midweek Pool Sessions

As no doubt you are all aware, I have been concerned with the fall in numbers at the Monday evening pool session at Ashfield school for a while now and no matter what we try to do, or what we try to organise, we struggle to boost attendance!

So, having asked members why they don’t attend the Monday session, one of the main reasons is the day. A lot of you said that the two sessions were too close together and that the Monday night was too close to the weekend, unfortunately, it was the ancient Egyptians who invented the 365 day calendar and Monday has been close to Saturday since the Romans named them!!!!, if only they’d have called Monday Wednesday instead, we could have had a midweek session on a Monday!

Anyway I digress, having scoured the shire for more midweek friendly pool time (believe me, it would be easier looking for a needle at the bottom of Stoney than trying to secure an hours worth of pool time, it’s so over subscribed you wouldn’t believe), we have had a breakthrough, only a small breakthrough but a breakthrough all the same !

As from this week, the pool session will be on Tuesday evenings from 7.45-8.45pm, as I said it’s only a small breakthrough but it’s closer to Wednesday than Monday will ever be.

Diving Officer

Hi all

Some of you may be aware that I have been appointed to the prestigious role of Diving Officer(D.O), which I am more than happy to take on. The role of the D.O is mainly to oversee all the diving and training in the club to make sure it is carried out to safe standards and within the guidelines of the BSAC. Cheesy Steve will still be doing the role of Training Officer.

That said it would be impossible for me to be on every dive trip and be in attendance every time training is being carried out. So from that, this is what I would like from the following:

  • Divers, please make sure you plan the dive and dive the plan, dive within your capabilities, be safe and enjoy yourself.
  • Dive Managers, as they are called now days, please report your trips before they happen and after to say all safe and well by either email, phone call or text. If I am not available then report to Training Officer. Also please ensure log sheets are filled in and completed. Let me have them next time you see me.
  • Instructors, please inform Steve or me of any training that is taking place. Assistant Instructors, please be reminded that no instruction should take place without a qualified instructor present. I know this may sound a bit anal, but as a club and as individuals have a duty of care to everyone  we dive with, whether or not they are club members.

Please feel free to contact me at any time for a chat or a gripe or whatever, I will try to be as helpful as possible and be their to listen, but as some of you are aware I tend to tell it like it is, so please don’t be offended if I tell you something you don’t want to hear. All that said I think we should carry on the trend to be happy and safe club, with no serious incidents AT ALL.

So have a fantastic time diving, and other all the other stuff that comes with it Look out for each other, WE are a club and a team and all in it together.

Yours

Andy Harrison

Skill Development Courses

Now then , its been noticed that some of us are a bit rusty when it comes to rescue breaths and oxygen admin. So we will be running an oxygen admin SDC and refresher training. This is open to all members,no matter what your level. For those who have not yet done one of these jobbys, then basically it’s a great day of lectures and O2 training and if you pass a log book sticker and a strong handshake, well done.

We are also running rescue scenarios at the pool on Mondays for the next few weeks, it would be good to see more people getting involved, its really good fun, lot better than Corry. Moving on from that we will be running a Practical Rescue management SDC which is another full day of lectures and open water scenarios.

Both of these courses are designed to give you an insight into what to do in a real emergency, god forbid, so it really makes sense to get involved.

Please get in touch with Andy Harrison or Steve Cheesmond if you’re interested in either so we can sort numbers and dates. Also I would appreciate some help so instructors please put yourselves forward.

I know I will be flooded with requests so first come first serve.

Happy Diving

Andy Harrison
